Shanmukhananda Theatre Group was founded during the Golden
Jubilee year of the Sabha,
2002-2003. Our first production was Amma retire aagiral, an adaptation from the famous
Marathi play, Aayi retire hothi, directed by Parameswar K. R. The full-length three and a
half hours play went on stage at Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Auditorium for the first time, on 27th
July, 2004.
Active Theatre Group members are Shanmukha Ratna Smt. Santosh Rajan, Director, K. Lakshmanan, Assistant-Director, Pichai, A. D. Hariharan, Saravanan, Venkat, Ramakrishnan, Viswanathan, Ponnambalam, Raghu, Alaguraja, Santhosh Rajan, Aparna Natarajan, Prema S., Jayanthi Muthuswamy, Asha Varadan, Aditya, Sweta, Sriram Rajan, Subbalakshmi Iyer, P. Subramaniam and Hariharan. Members apart from taking part in the play, are actively involved in backstage work as well. None of them are professional actors and all of them are well placed in life, either in corporate offices or in their own business. Passion for the art inspires them to spend time, energy and money and come together under the banner of Shanmukhananda Theatre Group, to make all productions a grand success. The Group hopes to stage Hindi and English dramas soon, to cater to a wider audience. The Group also plans to conduct short courses on all aspects of Theatre for sabha members. On the auspicious occasion of Poornabhishekam of Shri M. R. Doraiswamy and honouring of those members who had past eighty years of age, a short drama, Bless me was presented, as befitting the celebrations. STG has taken giant strides to promote theatre activities bringing to fore latent talent in the members. Several highly acclaimed Dramas have been staged over the years even reaching theatre fans outside Mumbai, at Chennai and Kolkata. ‘Siru Kadaigal’, a summary collection of short stories written by Smt. Santhosh Rajan, Director of the Group was published by the Sabha in 2008. A second book on short stories was brought out in 2012. Several of the short plays have been converted into Dramas.
Since its inception, the Theatre Group has staged totally 36 new plays( including the children’s thearte). Amma retire aagiral was the only drama which was adapted from Marathi. Rest of the dramas were written and directed by Smt. Santhosh Rajan. Some of STG dramas are posted on Sabha’s youtube channel , Shanmukha Channel, Mumbai.
